I have accused Tony of having a man crush on Vossy and this hasn’t changed my mind.

The Lions have a damning record with a similar playing group that won four games straight at the start of this year, but have now won just one of the past 13 games.

I’m not saying the coaching career of Voss is headed the same way as Northey, but the club is 14th after finishing sixth last year – from a club that boasts a Hollywood-like portfolio with the chartered jet, leading medical staff and big budgets for player comfort.

The Hollywood show is starting to look like a Mexican rip-off.

Voss and I are former teammates and I have a lot of respect for him, so naturally I take a keen interest. It is no different with Brad Scott – a mate and partner-in-crime for many years.

Sometimes the coach is unfairly a target, but he will always be accountable for certain things, such as the direct team around him.

In fairness to Vossy, some of the reasons for Brisbane’s 12 losses from 13 games are out of his control.

The loss of Dan Merrett left the side without their best backman and leader. Ash McGrath’s injuries hurt the vital run needed to out-position opposition backline set-ups.

And the best kick, Josh Drummond, was gone for the season.

Suddenly the forward-line supply dried up as ball movement and quick delivery suffered. Gone was the ability to kick quick goals.

Mitch Clark has had a very poor year after finishing third in last year’s best-and-fairest. He looks like someone who has trouble sharing the ruck duties. And what on earth has happened to the very talented Justin Sherman?

The boy can play, but now he looks mentally out of sorts with the loss of natural flair.

I am not sure if he is injured, but, geez, I the support around him from the top down looks to have dried up.

Many years ago the club kept telling us of the need to build a team around one man – Jon Brown.

I argued that this was going to be open for disaster because while that can work in a five-person basketball side, a team of 22 can’t rely on one or two.

That is great for Browny, but an indictment on the rest of the group.

There has been a small witch-hunt on one of Vossy’s right-hand men, Dan Collins.

Their friendship is one built on mutual respect. Dan’s main opponents seem to be coming from former Lions employees who appear to have a grudge against him.

Most inside the club say it isn’t that bad with Dan, because he is often on the periphery and not as influential as people have been suggesting.

I know Dan from a charity ride we did in 2005.

Dan is self-assured and confident that he can do whatever he sets his mind to, but my question to Vossy is what qualification does Dan have in the role of footy manager?

In fairness, Dan is a very good talker, but if you employ your friends, then you have to ensure they are the most qualified for that role.

Add to this, the decision to trade Daniel Bradshaw, a very relaxed man who was popular around the club. Others like Joel Macdonald and Scott Harding were let go.

Vossy brought a group of experienced players from other teams into the club. It was a bold move, but one unlikely to pay off in the first season.

Another reason why he should be judged after next season.

Vossy will have more cohesion with all those new recruits next season, and I would like nothing better to see my old mate succeed as a coach the way he did as a player.

But if that doesn’t work, then Vossy will have a use-by date just like the rest of us, despite his unhealthy golden-boy image in the club.

Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse defends bench moves

Malthouse is a firm believer that the number should not be capped, but he says the AFL will not listen to the Magpies’ arguments.

The AFL is likely to put a limit on the number of times a team can interchange players during games, with the restriction set to come in next year.

But Malthouse and Carlton coach Brett Ratten strongly argue that higher bench rotations help prolong the careers of players, and also questioned the assumption that large number of rotations made the game less appealing to watch.

“Does it detract from the game? I’m bemused that people … the AFL … say that it’s ugly,” Malthouse said today.

“I watch the game closely, I’m also on SEN (radio) so I’m able to watch the game from a distance and divorce myself from the emotions of winning and losing.

“I don’t even see them running off the ground. It’s bizarre to say it doesn’t look good. All indicators are that it does help sides.”

The league is worried that the dramatic increase in interchange numbers in the past few years has meant more injuries during games.

Collingwood have been a trendsetter among the clubs using the interchange bench much more often, often as a tactical ploy.
